Human Development: Individual Activity

"Throwing a Fit!"

Lifeskill:

  • Decision Making & Conflict Resolution

Overview:

Youth will participate individually to complete the activity “Child Guidance Techniques”. This will look much like a “Dear Abby” advice column in the newspaper. The participating youth will serve as the person responding to the parent’s question about his/her child’s behavioral issues. In this activity the youth will read the “parent’s” question to them, then rank four possible responses from “best-practice recommendation” (best) to “not suggested” (worst).

Objective:

Participants will learn about the research-based child guidance techniques that are developmentally appropriate to children of different ages. Best-practice child guidance techniques will highlight ways that participants can grow as thoughtful decision-makers who take all variables into account when making a decision (instead of being reactive). This skill is relevant to those who may interact with children regularly now (babysitting, siblings, etc.) or in the future (teachers, at church, as parents, or as extended family).
