1932
Herb Henderson (B.S., agriculture), Athens, GA, is emeritus professor and head, department of dairy science, University of Georgia. He was named a fellow in the American Dairy Science Association at its recent meeting in Guelph, Ontario.
1937
Dr. William M. (Bill) Roberts (B.S., animal science), Raleigh, NC, is a professor and department head at North Carolina State University. He was named a fellow in the American Dairy Science Association at its recent meeting in Guelph, Ontario.
1940
Dr. Robert W. Moore (B.S., agronomy), Maryville, TN, is a retired veterinarian. He was in charge of U.S.D.A. meat inspection.
1942
Lee Street Stith (M.S., ag economics), Tucson, AZ, is retired from the University of Arizona where he was a professor and plant breeder. He is spending retirement traveling, gardening, and doing consulting work.
1947
Wilton L. Childers (B.S., agronomy), Campbell, MO, is presently a cattle producer after 27 years as a field representative for the University of Missouri.
1949
Dr. James Luther Pointer (B.S.; Ph.D., 1974), Knoxville, TN, is professor emeritus of ornamental horticulture and landscape design with UT. He recently received the Knoxville Convention and Visitors Bureau's first Tourism Impact Award for being instrumental in bringing more than $1.2 million in convention business to Knoxville. A World War II veteran and holder of the Purple Heart, he coordinated events for veterans groups.
1952
Dr. William (Bill) Flatt (B.S., animal science) Athens, GA, was named a fellow in the American Dairy Science Association at its recent meeting in Guelph, Ontario.
1958
Charles E. Darnell (B.S., animal husbandry and ag education; M.S. 1960, animal nutrition) Lafayette, TN, is chairman and CEO of Citizens Bank in Lafayette. He has served as president of Citizens Bancorp Investments, Inc., president of Macon County General Hospital, and board member of the Tennessee Bankers Association, the Macon Golf Club, and the 4-H Club Foundation.
1961
G. Ray Wilson (B.S., animal science; M.S. 1964), Smyrna, TN, has been named director of information and public affairs with the Tennessee Farmers Co-op in LaVergne, TN.
1967
Vernon L. Glover (B.S., animal science), LaVergne, TN, has been named president and chief executive officer of Tennessee Farmers Cooperative. A native of Giles County, Glover is a Vietnam veteran and began his Co-op career in 1970.
1970
Hale Moss (B.S., ag education), Mt. Juliet, TN, is manager of Moss Florist and Garden Center. He received the 1997 Thorton Taylor Award from the Tennessee Association of Fairs for outstanding contributions to Tennessee agricultural fairs.
1973
Dr. James C. Barker, P.E. (Ph.D., agricultural engineering) recently achieved fellow status in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. He has been a member of ASAE for 23 years, and is a professor and Extension specialist in the biological and agricultural engineering department at North Carolina State University.
1977
Kenneth B. Miller (B.S., wildlife & fisheries), Hendersonville, TN, is environmental coordinator, Region Three, for the Tennessee Department of Transportation in Nashville with 20 years of service.
1979
Ola M. Archer (B.S., animal science; M.S. food technology, 1987), Albertville, AL, is northeast Alabama division quality assurance manager for Gold Kist, Inc. of Boaz, AL.
1980
Dr. Steven B. Feldman (B.S., plant and soil science), Cary, IL, is senior clay mineralogist with American Colloid Company in Arlington Heights, IL. He completed the Ph.D. in crop and soil environmental science in 1995.
1982
Michael R. Elkins (B.S., animal science), Kingsville, TX, is assistant professor and chair of communications and theater arts at Texas A&M University, Kingsville. He defended his dissertation at Southern Illinois University in June 1997.
Kent Webb (B.S., forest recreation), Chattanooga, TN, is manager of Steak and Shake in Hixson, TN.
1984
Dr. Jerry Allen (D.V.M.), Monticello, KY, is owner and chief of staff at Wayne County Veterinary Clinic. In August 1997, he married Debra Ann Leigh.
1987
Dr. David F. Dean (D.V.M.; Ph.D., comparative medicine), Mobile, AL, is assistant professor in the biology department at Spring Hill College. He has recently been appointed chair of the department and was voted Teacher of the Year for 1997-98.
1991
Steven Gass (M.S., ag and extension education), Baxter, TN, is an agriculture teacher at Cookeville High School. He and his wife, Patty, are parents to Abigail Lynne Gass, born July 21, 1997. He has recently stepped down as president of the Tennessee Vocational Agriculture Teachers' Association.
1994
Kirk A. Swortzel (M.S., ag and extension education), Opelika, AL, has been appointed assistant professor of agribusiness education at Auburn University.
Chad Malone (B.S., ornamental horticulture), Cookeville, TN, is head golf course superintendent at Cookeville Country Club.
1995
Kristi M. Brooks (B.S., plant and soil science), Knoxville, TN, is inspector/manager for Helton and Associates, Inc., Louisville, TN.
April Hendrickson Nitzsche (B.S., plant and soil science), Knoxville, TN, is a soil scientist for the Knox County Soil Conservation District. She is currently updating the Knox County soil survey.
1996
Hope Ellis-Ashburn (M.S., ag and extension education), Kingston, TN, is an assistant extension agent doing 4-H agriculture work in Roane County. She married Neal Ashburn (B.S., 1996, plant and soil science) in April 1997. She recently received three awards in communications from the Tennessee Association of Extension 4-H Agents and the Tennessee Association of Agricultural Agents and Specialists.
DEATHS
L.O. Colebank (Class of 1928) died September 11, 1997, in Knoxville. Colebank taught at Martin Junior College (now UT Martin) before joining the UT Agricultural Extension Service, where he served as county agent, 4-H specialist, and dairy specialist. He was chief classifier for the American Guernsey Association from 1954 to 1971. His portrait hangs in the National Dairy Shrine in Fort Atkinson, WI, in honor of his contributions to the Guernsey breed.
Mabel Davenport died October 10, 1997, in Knoxville. She managed the cafeteria on the ag campus from 1946 to 1982, when she retired from UT after 37 years of service. The cafeteria was named Mabel's in her honor.
Dr. Charles D. Griffin (Class of 1955) died April 4, 1997, in Baton Rouge, LA. He worked for the UT Agricultural Extension Service in Washington County from 1962 to 1969 and with the Auburn University Cooperative Extension service from 1973 to 1980. He retired from the Louisiana State University Cooperative Extension Service in 1995 where he was project leader for Extension dairy scientists and director of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association.
William S. (Buddy) Hamilton, Jr., (B.S., 1976, agriculture; M.S., 1978, ag economics) died in May 1997 of a heart attack. He was president of Colonial Bank, Fayetteville, TN.
William P. (Bill) Stephens (B.S., 1947; M.S. 1949), who died in 1993, was honored posthumously in April 1997 with the dedication of the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, the development of which was his inspiration. A native of Carter County, TN, he became an agricultural economist for New Mexico State University in Las Cruces in 1949, and was coordinator of research and assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station there. He later served as director/secretary of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and as national president of the Association of State Secretaries of Agriculture.
